âSo, Coffee?â Itâs a subtle invitationâan open question that invites you to pause, reflect, and consider a cup of coffee or perhaps a conversation around it. Itâs an invitation to step into the world of coffee.
But âSoCoffeeâ is also an expression. Itâs like an adjective, capturing the feeling, the ritual, the emotion that coffee brings. When something is so coffee, itâs more than just a drinkâitâs an experience, a connection, a shared moment.
SoCoffee is building a content-led digital supply chain for Indian coffee that connects every part of the journey from farm to cup. Our purpose? To bridge the gap between growers and consumers in Indiaâs coffee ecosystemâand do it in a way thatâs scalable, impactful, and technology-enabled.
We believe thereâs a significant gap to bridge in Indian coffee today. Coffee growers rarely get to see their coffee through a consumerâs eyes, and coffee lovers donât get to know about the story and effort behind each cup. Our mission is to change that in a technology-enabled manner. Weâre starting with content: sharing the stories, expertise, people, and dedication that go into every bean, serving as both inspiration and education for growers and consumers alike.
But weâre not stopping there! We aim to bring this content and digitization into every part of the coffee supply chain, making each cup traceable, relatable, and connected. Through partnerships with growers, supply chain players, and retail outletsâalong with our own farm-to-cup touchpointsâweâre creating a platform that not only delivers coffee but celebrates its entire journey. So, every sip comes with a story.
âWe deliver farm-to-cup coffee and farm-to-phone storiesâ
It all began with a weekend experiment in January 2022. Karumbaiah, SoCoffeeâs founder, had always been close to coffee, spending years around coffee estates in Coorg. One weekend, inspired by his roots and a spark to share quality coffee, he set up a simple Shopify site offering freshly roasted, ground coffee from a local shop in Gonikoppal. An email to his alumni group led to 50 orders.
The orders, however, also came with a flood of questions: âIs it a dark or light roast?â âWhich estate is it from?â âCan I use it in a French press?â Despite his background, Karumbaiah realized he couldnât answer these questions, and it hit him: even with his deep connection to coffee, there was still so much he didnât know about what goes into the cup.
This led to a deep dive over the next 3 years, where he rolled up his sleeves to learn about growing, processing, roasting, brewing, and cupping. And the more he learned, the clearer it became: the gap between farm and cup was real. Small growers often never tasted their own coffee, and consumers had little idea of the journey behind theirs. This realization became the core of SoCoffeeâs mission: to bridge the gap to bridge the gap between farm and cup, but to do it in a manner that is technology driven and hence scalable.
As Karumbaiah says, âMy journey started as an accidental experiment, sparked by questions I couldnât answer. That experience pushed me to dig deeperâand inspired me to make that learning accessible to others.â This led to SoCoffeeâs approach of being primarily rooted in content, where the first step is to spotlight and celebrate all the good work happening across Indiaâs coffee ecosystem. Once weâve inspired curiosity in people, our aim is to transform it into an experienceâwhere enjoying coffee goes hand-in-hand with knowing its story and supporting its roots.
Karumbaiah has spent close to two decades in Indiaâs startup and tech ecosystem, working in content, strategy, and product roles. In his most recent role as Chief Strategy Officer at YourStory, he is helping shape Indiaâs largest platform for startups. Before that, he founded Pixtory, a platform for Indian photographers, which was later acquired by YourStory. His experience also includes managing strategic roles both at InMobi, Indiaâs first unicorn and at Blackstoneâs portfolio companies.
But coffee is where home is. Growing up as a third-generation coffee grower in Coorg, his familyâs KarkuKaad estateârun by his parentsâis the source of many coffee experiments (and occasional mishaps!). This unique blend of startup experience and coffee heritage has shaped his approach to SoCoffee, where heâs now blending his content and tech experience with a passion for coffee.
